Identity
Château Pavie Macquin is a Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé. It is owned by the Corre-Macquin family and managed by Nicolas Thienpont, alongside Cyrille Thienpont as successor manager. The estate's consultant oenologist is Stéphane Derenoncourt and the cellar master is Philippe Dauvey. The estate is located in Saint-Émilion (33330).
History and philosophy
Château Pavie Macquin was founded in 1899 by Albert Macquin, born in 1852. Albert Macquin played a pivotal role in Bordeaux viticulture by introducing grafted rootstocks to Saint-Émilion, an innovation that helped rescue the vineyard following the phylloxera crisis. The estate was promoted to 1er Grand Cru Classé in 2006, a status confirmed in 2012.
Since 2008, Cyrille Thienpont has been actively involved in managing the estate. Château Pavie Macquin is committed to environmental certification with the HVE (High Environmental Value) label and practices biodynamic viticulture.

The vineyard (terroir)
The Château Pavie Macquin vineyard spans a planted area of 15 hectares. It is situated on the highest plateau of Saint-Émilion, at an altitude ranging between 75 and 100 metres. The terroir is predominantly composed of heavy clays over limestone bedrock, featuring molasse soils overlying Asteria limestone (calcaires à astéries) alongside ancient colluvial soils with silt. The estate boasts a diversity of nine distinct clay-limestone soil types, forming a single contiguous block.
The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (78%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (2%). The average vine age is 40 years. Planting density was increased in 2015, rising from 5,500 to 8,500 vines per hectare. Harvesting is carried out by hand.
Vinification and ageing
The estate has introduced recent innovations, notably a vat room designed for plot-by-plot vinification and a new underground ageing cellar.

Vins de Bordeaux : admiré, l’œnologue Michel Rolland « a marqué l’histoire »
L'article de Sud Ouest rend hommage à Michel Rolland, œnologue libournais décédé le 20 mars 2026 à l'âge de 78 ans des suites d'un infarctus. Sa disparition suscite de nombreux témoignages élogieux au sein du vignoble bordelais et au-delà. Daniel Mouty, président des Vignerons indépendants de Nouvelle-Aquitaine, le décrit comme une figure ayant marqué l'histoire et une personne généreuse et agréable. Dans les années 1990, Michel Rolland a transformé la viticulture girondine en promouvant la sélection des grappes et la maturité optimale du raisin, tout en prônant une vinification moins interventionniste.
