Identity

Château Petit Mangot is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, in the Gironde department. The property is run by Nadia and David, who represent the fourth generation of winegrowers. Chantal and Jean-Yves, associate winegrowers, also contribute to the estate's operations. The entire estate is managed under the legal entity SCEA Vignobles Décamps.

History and philosophy

The family history of Château Petit Mangot dates back to 1930, when founders Armand and Henriette Ducou settled here and planted a 6-hectare vineyard. In 1941, Paulette Ducou and Jean Décamps took over the reins, marking the second generation. The third generation, comprising Jean-Yves Décamps and Chantal Frigo, took charge in 1971. Under their leadership, the vineyard expanded in 1984 to reach 12 hectares.

Since 2002, Nadia, joined by David in 2013, has carried on this family tradition. In terms of viticultural practices, the estate is committed to an environmentally friendly approach, notably banning herbicides since 2007. Château Petit Mangot has held Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification since 2020, favouring sustainable plant protection methods alongside mechanical soil cultivation (both along the vine rows and between them).

Appellations

Château Petit Mangot produces wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. The vineyard is nestled in the heart of the hillside terroirs of this appellation, in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse.

The tasting room and cellar shop are open Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The estate is open year-round, from January to December. Vineyard tours and tastings are available by appointment, priced at €6 per person for a guided tour. The estate also welcomes groups and provides amenities including disabled access, parking, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and international shipping. Pets are welcome. Payment can be made by bank card (including American Express) or in cash.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Petit Mangot spans 12 hectares, situated approximately 8 kilometres from Saint-Émilion and 45 kilometres from Bordeaux. The plots are planted on clay-limestone soils, specifically hillside clay-limestone over molasse du Fronsadais, benefiting from a south/south-eastern exposure overlooking the Dordogne valley. The average age of the vines is 38 years.

The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (around 73%), which lends red fruit aromas and generous roundness to the wines. Cabernet Franc accounts for roughly 20% of the plantings, imparting spicy and peppery notes along with silky tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, representing around 7% of the vineyard, was planted across 70 ares in 2021.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées reflecting the diversity of its production. Among the red wines are Château Petit Mangot, as well as “Prélude” and “Miss”, all crafted within the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. Château Petit Mangot also produces a rosé wine named “Poème”, and a Blanc de Noir called “L’éphémère”.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification at Château Petit Mangot combines varied approaches. Harvesting is carried out both mechanically and by hand. For winemaking, the estate uses temperature-controlled concrete vats, as well as stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. Ageing takes place primarily in vats (around 90% of the volume), complemented by barrel ageing, with 5% in new oak barrels and 5% in barrels of one wine or more.
