Identity

Château Yon-Figeac is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saint-Émilion, in the Gironde. Owned by Alain Château, it is a Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion.

History and philosophy

The Château Yon-Figeac building was constructed in 1886. The estate has been a Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion since the initial classification in 1955. It earned a mention in the Guide Vert in 2006. Château Yon-Figeac is committed to environmental certification, having obtained sustainable farming certification in 2011, ISO 14001 certification in 2013, and Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) Level 3 certification from the 2016 vintage onwards.

Château Yon-Figeac produces wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé appellation.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Yon-Figeac vineyard covers a single contiguous block of 24 hectares. The average vine age is 32 years, with an average planting density of 6,200 vines/ha. The soils are sandy-clay with "crasses de fer" (iron pan subsoils). Soil management is carried out using traditional ploughing. The grape variety breakdown consists of 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot. The estate practises sustainable viticulture.

Flagship cuvées

The estate produces Château Yon-Figeac, its grand vin, in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé appellation. A second wine, Les Roches de Yon, is also made under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. There is also a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru cuvée named Yon Saint-Martin.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting is carried out by hand. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled, truncated cone-shaped stainless steel vats, with a vatting time of 25 to 30 days. For the grand vin, ageing lasts 12 months: 40% in new barrels and 60% in one- and two-wine French oak barrels. The second wine is aged in foudres or French oak barrels of one or more previous wines. Total ageing lasts approximately one year.
