Identity

Château Camponac is located in Bourg, in the Gironde département. The estate is owned by SAS Château Camponac, managed by Claude Rougier.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Camponac dates back to the 19th century, with a main house estimated to have been built in the 1850s. The estate was first mentioned in the 1893 edition of the Féret guide, where it was then listed as a Cru Bourgeois. Claude Rougier acquired the estate in 2020.

Château Camponac's philosophy centres on sustainable agriculture, going beyond conventional organic practices. The estate is in conversion to organic farming and implements methods such as agroforestry. Various initiatives are in place to promote biodiversity and soil health: ponds have been enlarged, and mobile chicken coops house around thirty hens to aerate and fertilise the soil. The goal is to reach a flock of around a hundred hens and, from 2022, to grow the maize needed to feed them in pursuit of self-sufficiency. Miniature sheep are also used for natural weed control and fertilisation. Since 2022, 1,300 trees have been planted across the property, including over 200 within the vine rows, contributing to 2 km of hedgerows.

Appellations

Château Camponac wines are produced under the Côtes de Bourg appellation.

What is Château Camponac's viticultural philosophy and environmental commitment?
Château Camponac's philosophy centres on sustainable agriculture, going beyond conventional organic practices. The estate is in conversion to organic farming and employs agroforestry. Biodiversity initiatives include enlarging ponds, using mobile chicken coops, and grazing sheep for weeding and fertilisation. More than 1,300 trees have been planted since 2022, including some within the vine rows, creating 2 km of hedgerows to enrich the vineyard ecosystem.
What are the characteristics of Château Camponac's vineyard in terms of grape varieties and terroir?
The Château Camponac vineyard covers 6.5 hectares. The grape varieties planted are Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The terroir is diverse: Cabernet Sauvignon is planted on clay-limestone with sandstone limestone, Merlot and Cabernet Franc on silty-clay soils, and Malbec as well as certain Merlot parcels on quartzite gravels. Viticultural practices include gentle pruning, cover crops, and no-till farming.
How are Château Camponac wines crafted and aged?
Winemaking at Château Camponac involves hand harvesting with sorting. Pressing is carried out using a ratchet press. Vinification takes place in concrete vats or terracotta jars. The “Dolium” cuvée is notably made from whole bunches in terracotta jars for 7 to 8 months, followed by 3 to 4 months of ageing after pressing. The wines can be aged in 500-litre French oak barrels or amphorae, with a special emphasis on cuvées crafted with no added sulphites.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Camponac vineyard covers 6.5 hectares, within an overall 8.5-hectare property including meadows, the main residence, a guest house, and outbuildings. The oldest vines date back to 1959. The estate is situated roughly 1.5 km from the village of Bourg and around thirty kilometres from Bordeaux.

The estate's soils are diverse. The Cabernet Sauvignon parcels lie on a clay-limestone terroir with deep Eocene sandstone limestone. For Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the soils are Quaternary, composed of clay-loam colluvium. Finally, Malbec and certain Merlot parcels are planted on quartzite gravels from a fluvial or deltaic formation, located at the top of the slopes.

The grape varieties planted are Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.

Viticultural practices include gentle pruning since 2021, the planting of cover crops (triticale and rye) in 2022 to enrich soils and limit evaporation, and no-till farming. To protect the vines, horsetail decoctions and nettle and meadowsweet infusions are used. Vine moth management has been carried out via pheromone mating disruption since 2022. Resistant grape varieties, such as Souvignier gris, are being considered for future plantings to reduce the need for treatments.

Flagship cuvées

Château Camponac produces red wines. Among the cuvées, “Dolium” stands out for its distinctive vinification method. The estate's wines have been made with no added sulphites since the 2020 vintage, released in April 2021.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting is carried out by hand, with pre-sorting in the vineyard and a pass over a vibrating sorting table. Pressing is performed using a ratchet press. Vinification takes place in concrete vats or terracotta jars.

The “Dolium” cuvée is crafted using whole bunches, without crushing, in terracotta jars for 7 to 8 months. After pressing, it undergoes an additional 3 to 4 months of ageing. This cuvée is made without additives or processing aids (sugar, oak, chips, yeast, etc.) and with no added sulphites, notably for the 2020 vintage.

Ageing can take place in 500-litre French oak barrels or in amphorae. The 500-litre barrels are used to produce wines with subtle oak notes, tempered by the choice of cooperage.
