Château Carignan is a winegrowing estate located in Carignan-de-Bordeaux, in Gironde. It is situated on the Right Bank of the Garonne, just a few kilometres from Bordeaux.
History and philosophy
The origins of Château Carignan date back to the 11th century. Historical records show that the Seignory of Carignan was rebuilt in 1452 by Jean Poton de Xaintrailles, a comrade-in-arms of Jeanne d'Arc, following a gift from King Charles VII of France.
The estate practises sustainable viticulture, notably using natural organic fertilisers.
Appellations
Château Carignan produces wines under the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellation as well as under the IGP Atlantique appellation.

Château Carignan is located at 60 Allée des Châteaux, 33360 Carignan-de-Bordeaux.
The estate shop is open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. On Fridays, it is open from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. It is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
The estate offers tastings and cellar-door sales.

The Château Carignan vineyard covers 65 hectares within an estate extending across a total of 150 hectares. It is characterised by clay-limestone hillsides topped with stony gravel, benefiting from a south and south-westerly exposure. The local climate is temperate oceanic, influenced by the proximity of the Garonne river.
The vineyard's grape variety breakdown is dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for the red wines. For the white wines, Sauvignon is the primary grape variety, accompanied by Sémillon.
Flagship cuvées
Château Carignan Rouge
This cuvée, the estate's flagship, is predominantly crafted from Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The vines dedicated to this cuvée have an average age of 30 to 35 years. It is a still red wine, typically aged for 12 months in one- and two-wine barrels. It can be served between 15 and 18°C and offers an ageing potential of 5 to 10 years.
Château Carignan Prima Rouge
The Prima cuvée is a red wine made from 100% Merlot. The vines dedicated to this cuvée are older, with an average age of 45 years. Ageing takes place in new French oak barrels for 18 months, imparting a distinctive structure. The recommended serving temperature is between 16 and 18°C, with an ageing potential of up to 15 years.
L'Orangerie de Carignan Rouge
This red wine, the estate's second wine, is composed predominantly of Merlot, with contributions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The vines have an average age of 12 years. Ageing is carried out in stainless steel vats with micro-oxygenation. Its serving temperature ranges between 13 and 17°C, and it is best enjoyed within 2 to 5 years.
L'Orangerie de Carignan Rosé
A still rosé wine crafted from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from vines around 15 years of age. It is aged on fine lees in stainless steel vats for 4 to 5 months.
L'Orangerie de Carignan Blanc
This white cuvée is predominantly made from Sauvignon and Sémillon from vines averaging 15 years of age. It is aged on fine lees in stainless steel vats for 4 to 5 months. A serving temperature of 8 to 12°C is recommended, and it has an ageing potential of around 2 years.
Motta - Verta Rouge (sans sulfites)
This red wine is a blend of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It stands out for having no added sulphites, with a total SO2 of less than 10 mg/L. It is aged in stainless steel vats with micro-oxygenation. Serving between 13 and 17°C is recommended, and it is best enjoyed within 3 years.
Vinification and ageing
The wines of Château Carignan benefit from winemaking methods tailored to each cuvée. Château Carignan Rouge is aged for 12 months in one- and two-wine barrels. The Château Carignan Prima Rouge cuvée is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. L'Orangerie de Carignan Rouge undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats with micro-oxygenation. The L'Orangerie de Carignan Rosé and Blanc cuvées are aged on fine lees in stainless steel vats for 4 to 5 months.

Portes ouvertes Maison des Vins 2026 | Ville de Cadillac sur Garonne
La 31ème édition des Journées Portes Ouvertes de la Région des Premières Côtes de Bordeaux se tiendra les 6 et 7 juin 2026, de 10h à 19h. Cet événement permettra aux visiteurs de rencontrer une trentaine de vignerons d'exception qui partageront leur passion et proposeront de nombreuses animations, activités ludiques et déjeuners.
