History and Philosophy
The history of Château d'Armajan des Ormes dates back to Pierre Sauvage, its first known owner. The Sauvage family was ennobled in 1565 by Charles IX. His grandson Jacques continued the development of the family estates.
The château was dismantled in 1653 during the Fronde. Its reconstruction began in 1663 under the impetus of the Guichaner family and was completed in 1750 by Vincent Guichaner, then Lord of Armajan.
The first estate-bottled Sauternes was produced in 1898 by Armand Gallice.
In 1953, Louis Machy acquired the property and initiated an extensive restoration programme spanning nearly two decades. His daughter Marguerite and his son-in-law Michel Perromat supported him in this endeavour. Michel Perromat also completed the reconstitution of the walled Clos d’Armajan vineyard by acquiring the vines of Château Le Juge.
Today, the estate is dedicated to environmentally friendly viticulture, as evidenced by its Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification.
