Château Grand Jean is owned by Vignobles Dulon. It is located in the commune of Soulignac, in the Gironde département.

History and philosophy

Château Grand Jean is recognized as the oldest estate of Vignobles Dulon. The Dulon family has been working the land here for nine generations. The estate also produces a certified vegan Bordeaux Blanc cuvée.

Flagship wines

Château Grand Jean Bordeaux Blanc

This white cuvée is crafted from a blend of Sémillon (60%), Sauvignon Blanc (20%), and Sauvignon Gris (20%). The vinification process includes harvesting the grapes at optimal aromatic maturity, pressing with selection of the musts, cold settling, cold stabulation, and temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation at low temperatures. Ageing takes place in vats on fine lees for several months. This wine is certified vegan, presenting fruity aromas and a balanced structure.

Château Grand Jean Élevé en Fût de Chêne (red wine)

This red cuvée, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Merlot (30%) for the 1998 vintage, is aged in French and American oak barrels for eight to twelve months. The wine is characterised by a distinct aromatic complexity and a tannic structure.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Grand Jean covers a documented area of 100 to 120 hectares. The soils are described as clay-gravel or clay-limestone. The average age of the vines is around thirty years. It is situated on the right bank of the Garonne.

The grape varieties for red wines include Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. For white wines, the vineyard is planted with Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sauvignon Gris, as well as Muscadelle.

Vinification and ageing

For the white wine, vinification begins with harvesting the grapes at their optimal aromatic maturity, followed by pressing with must selection and cold settling. Cold stabulation is carried out for 3 to 6 days, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation at low temperatures. Ageing takes place in vats on fine lees for several months before fining, blending, and bottling at the estate.

For certain red cuvées, ageing can last between 12 and 16 months in new French oak barrels.
