Château Haut-Bergey

Identity

Château Haut-Bergey is a winegrowing estate located in Léognan, in the Gironde. It is owned and managed by Sylviane Garcin Cathiard. Patrice Lévêque serves as vineyard manager and cellar master. The estate also benefits from the expertise of consultant oenologist Alain Raynaud.

History and philosophy

The origins of Château Haut-Bergey date back to the 15th century. In the 18th century, the estate was owned by Jean-François de Cresse and spanned around 100 hectares. Following a period of vineyard replanting in the late 1950s, the Garcin Cathiard family acquired the property in 1991.

The estate began converting to biodynamics in 2016 and achieved Biodyvin certification. This philosophy seeks to respect the natural balance of both soil and vine.

Appellations

Château Haut-Bergey's plots are situated in the heart of the village of Léognan. The estate produces wines under the Pessac-Léognan appellation, as well as Vin de France.

Practical information

Château Haut-Bergey is located at 69, Cours Gambetta, 33850 Léognan. The estate is open Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and is closed on weekends and public holidays.

Tours and tastings are available by appointment and can be conducted in French, English or Spanish. The estate does not offer on-site accommodation or catering. Wine purchases are possible at the property, and mail order is also available.

The vineyard (terroir)

Château Haut-Bergey's vineyard covers an area of 40 hectares. It is planted on gravel outcrops resting on a clay-limestone subsoil, characteristic of its terroir. The average age of the vines is around 40 years. Harvesting is carried out both by hand and mechanically.

The red grape varieties comprise 47% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. For the white wines, the grape varieties are 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon.

Flagship cuvées

Château Haut-Bergey offers a range of red and white wines. The red first wine is Château Haut-Bergey, and the second red wine is Etoile de Bergey. For the white wines, Château Haut-Bergey is the first wine, and L'Etoile de Bergey is the second wine.

The estate also crafts special cuvées such as Cuvées Paul (in red and white), Château Branon, and a range of single-varietal wines. It also produces a rosé under the Vin de France appellation, named Épisode Rose.

Vinification and ageing

The Château Haut-Bergey vat room is equipped with temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing precise temperature management during vinification. The wines are aged in an air-conditioned barrel cellar.
