Domaine de Mauriet is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Léognan, in Gironde. The estate is owned by Jérôme Landais, who is also the winemaker. The estate's legal structure is an SCEA.

History and philosophy

The history of Domaine de Mauriet is defined by a return to one's roots and Jérôme Landais's desire to carry forward a family tradition. His great-great-grandfather was already a winegrower, alongside his work as a farrier and market gardener. Jérôme Landais began replanting the vines in 2016. The estate's first vintages, 2019 and 2020, were crafted in a garage. In early 2021, he officially established himself as a young farmer. The estate is committed to environmentally friendly viticulture, using herbal preparations and following lunar cycles. Soil life is sustained through grass cover cropping, and the estate has reintroduced animal traction, alongside a commitment to low yields.

The estate's parcels produce wines under the Pessac-Léognan and Graves protected designations of origin.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Domaine de Mauriet vineyard spans a total surface area of 1.33 hectares. The soils are characterised by the presence of a sandy vein. Harvesting is carried out by hand. The grape varieties planted comprise 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot (another source indicates a red grape variety distribution of 92.50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.50% Merlot). The estate practises organic viticulture.

Flagship cuvées

The estate's primary wine is Domaine de Mauriet Tradition Rouge, produced under the Graves and Pessac-Léognan appellations. The estate also produces a second wine named Cuvée La Gravette. Average annual red wine production stands at around 6,000 bottles. The blend for the red cuvée consists of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot (another source mentions 92.50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.50% Merlot). The inaugural vintage for this cuvée was 2019.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification of the main cuvée takes place in open, untreated oak casks. Following this stage, the wine is transferred to stainless steel vats for homogenisation. Ageing is carried out in the same casks, which are fitted with heads in the meantime. New French oak barrels are used for each vintage.
