Identity

Château la Rose Vircoulon is owned by the Vircoulon family, established in the Bordeaux wine region for several generations. Pierre Vircoulon is the estate manager and winemaker. The estate is located in the commune of Saint-Hippolyte in Gironde.

History and philosophy

The Vircoulon family has been established in the region since the 13th century, cultivating vines from father to son. Pierre Vircoulon earned his vocational qualification in viticulture and oenology in 2014, before taking over management of SCEA Vignobles Vircoulon in 2017. The Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation was achieved in 2005.

The appellations

Château la Rose Vircoulon produces wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. Château Moulin de Faye, part of the same family operation, produces wines under the Bergerac appellation.

Opening hours for tours and tastings are Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 17:30, and Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00. The estate is closed on Sundays. Guided vineyard tours, ‘winemaker for a day’ workshops, and cellar tastings are available.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château la Rose Vircoulon covers 5 hectares, supplemented by 5.5 hectares at Château Moulin de Faye. The soils are clay-limestone. The average age of the vines is 50 years. The grape varieties planted comprise 59% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc.

Flagship cuvées

Château La Rose Vircoulon displays a ruby-hued appearance and a nose expressing vibrant fruit. On the palate, the wine is generous, full and rounded, offering ripe fruit flavours and toasty notes that lead into a long, persistent finish.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting is carried out mechanically. The ageing of the wines is divided between stainless steel tanks for 50% of the production and new oak barrels for the remaining 50%.
