Château Maillard

Identity

Château Maillard is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Mazères, in Gironde. It is owned by Bruno David, who manages the estate alongside Fabienne David.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Maillard began in 1962 when Pierre and Nicole David settled on the property. At that time, the vineyard covered around ten hectares. During the 1970s, the cultivated area reached 30 hectares. In 1980, a first expansion brought the vineyard to 55 hectares, and a winery was built. Following the death of Pierre David in 1982, his son Bruno joined his mother in the late 1980s to help run the estate. In the 1990s, the estate expanded by an additional 3 hectares. In 2008, Bruno David took the helm of the family business.

The estate is committed to environmentally friendly viticulture, supported by several certifications. It practices sustainable viticulture (agriculture raisonnée), has been HVE3 certified since 2018, and is working towards ISO 14001 certification. It is also a member of the SME des Vins de Bordeaux.

The appellations

The Château Maillard plots are situated in the commune of Mazères. They produce wines under the AOC Graves Rouge and AOC Graves appellations.

Practical information

Château Maillard is located in Ramonas, 33210 Mazères.

The tasting cellar is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm. On Saturday mornings, visits are by appointment. The estate is closed on Sundays and between Christmas and New Year's Day.

It is advisable to notify the estate prior to your visit. Group tours for 10 to 30 people can be arranged by appointment.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Maillard vineyard covers a contiguous area of 58 hectares, with all plots grouped around the cellar. The soils consist of gravel, topsoil, Garonne alluvium, clay, and silty sand, with a proportion of roughly 70% gravel and 30% topsoil on the surface. The subsoil is made up of gravel and clay. The average age of the vines is 25 years, and planting density ranges between 5,000 and 7,500 vines per hectare.

The vineyard's grape varieties for red wines comprise 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc. For the white wine, Sémillon is cultivated.

Flagship cuvées

Château Maillard produces a red wine and a white wine. The red cuvée, Château Maillard, is crafted from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. The white cuvée, also named Château Maillard, is made from the Sémillon grape variety.

Vinification and ageing

For the red wines, maceration lasts around 15 days. Ageing takes place in vats for one year, with a total ageing period of 24 months. Harvesting is carried out mechanically.

For the white wine, harvesting is done by hand, and vinification includes bâtonnage on the lees.
