Identity

Château TrotteVieille is a winegrowing estate located in Gironde, managed by the Castéja family. Philippe Castéja serves as managing director, with Christophe Dussutour as cellar master.

History and philosophy

The history of Château TrotteVieille dates back to the 15th century. The estate's name is said to originate from an elderly lady who regularly trotted to the stagecoach stop to gather the latest news. A 15th-century parchment written in Gascon is said to attest to the use of this name.

The estate was awarded a gold medal at the 1867 Exposition Universelle. In 1947, Marcel Borie acquired Château TrotteVieille. Philippe Castéja subsequently took over the management of the property in 1990.

Château TrotteVieille is committed to environmental certification under the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) framework.

Appellations

The plots at Château TrotteVieille produce wines under the Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellations. The estate is classified as a 1er Grand Cru Classé.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château TrotteVieille vineyard covers 12 hectares on the Saint-Émilion plateau. The soils are limestone-based. The average vine age is approximately 50 years. The estate is renowned for its pre-phylloxera Cabernet Franc vines, boasting around 3,000 pre-phylloxeric rootstocks. Harvesting is carried out by hand.

The vineyard's grape varieties comprise 49% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate practices sustainable viticulture (lutte raisonnée) and invests in agroforestry, with 60 trees and 750 metres of hedgerows. The property is also home to 3 beehives and 4 insect hotels.

Flagship cuvées

The estate's Grand Vin is Château TrotteVieille. A second wine, named Dame de TrotteVieille, was introduced in 2000 under the name Vieille Dame de TrotteVieille, before being renamed Dame de TrotteVieille in 2010. This second wine is crafted from young vines at Château TrotteVieille and, since 2012, includes fruit from Château Bergat, also classified as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé. Annual production stands at around 30,000 bottles.

Vinification and ageing

The estate inaugurated a new vat room in 2021, equipped with 25 vats, the largest with a capacity of 70 hectolitres. Wine ageing takes place in a barrel cellar carved into the limestone bedrock, combining new barrels and amphorae.
