Identity

Château Rioublanc is an estate located in the Bordeaux region. Philippe Carretero is its owner and winemaker, having joined the estate in 1989.

History and Philosophy

The history of Château Rioublanc dates back to 1909, when the Renouil family acquired the property. In 1956, Yves Renouil was at the helm of the estate. In 1963, Edouard Carretero purchased the property, which then spanned 38 hectares, including 5 hectares of vines. The family winegrowing business was established that same year. Philippe Carretero joined the estate as winemaker in 1989 and took over management. The estate committed to organic viticulture, beginning its conversion in 2009 and achieving certification that same year.

Château Rioublanc produces wines primarily under the Bordeaux appellation.

Practical Information

Château Rioublanc is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6.30 pm. Tours and tastings are available, including on weekends or in the evening by appointment. The estate also offers guest house accommodation, 'Maison des Capucins', located in Lalande-de-Pomerol. The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Rioublanc vineyard covers an area of 47 hectares. In 1989, the vineyard surface was 15 hectares. By 1994, it reached 40 hectares, with 36 hectares planted with red grape varieties and 4 hectares with white grape varieties. Since 1999, the planting density has been 5,000 vines per hectare. The red grape variety mix in 1994 was composed of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc. The white grape variety mix during the same period included Sauvignon and Sémillon.

Flagship Cuvées

Château Rioublanc offers a varied range of wines, including red, rosé, dry white, and moelleux Bordeaux, as well as Crémant de Bordeaux and grape juice. Among the white wines, Château Rioublanc blanc sec is an iconic cuvée, having received multiple awards, notably gold medals at the Concours Général de Paris for its 2023 and 2024 vintages. Château des Capucins, another wine marketed by the estate, was rated by Andreas Larsson, scoring 89/100 for the 2022 vintage and 92/100 for the 2023 vintage. Philippe Carretero also markets Bordeaux wines from other appellations, such as Saint-Émilion and Pomerol.

Vinification and Ageing

For certain vintages, ageing takes place in vats, as is the case for Château Rioublanc blanc sec 2023. The blend for Château Rioublanc 2011 was composed of 70% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. For the 2012 vintage of the white wine, the Sémillon and Sauvignon grape varieties were blended in equal parts. Production of Château Rioublanc blanc sec 2023 reached 11,600 bottles.
