Clos la Madeleine

Identity

Clos La Madeleine is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saint-Émilion. It is currently owned by the Moueix family via Château Bélair-Monange, which acquired it in 2017. Previously, the estate was managed by GFA Clos La Madeleine and owned by 84 private investors managed by Société Générale. Oenological consulting is provided by Hubert De Boüard.

History and Philosophy

The history of Clos La Madeleine dates back more than 150 years. The estate has undergone several changes, notably in 1996 when it was declassified. In 2006, the estate began working with Hubert De Boüard for oenological consulting. The vines are cultivated with meticulous care, like a garden. The property offers visits to its underground quarries, which serve as vinification and ageing cellars, offering naturally cool and humid conditions for the preservation of the wines.

The Appellations

Clos La Madeleine produces wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation.

The cellar door shop is open Monday to Sunday, from 09:30 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 18:00, all year round. The estate offers on-site direct sales as well as visits by appointment, with the capacity to welcome groups. Tours notably include the underground quarries used as cellars. The Vineyard (Terroir)

The vineyard of Clos La Madeleine covers a planted surface area of approximately 2.19 hectares. It is located on the slopes of the Saint-Émilion hillside, between La Gaffelière and La Madeleine, just below Château Bélair-Monange. The terroir is predominantly clay-limestone, benefiting from full southern exposure and sweeping views over the Dordogne valley. The average age of the vines is around 35 years. The grape variety blend consists of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc. Vineyard work is carried out entirely by hand, notably pruning, debudding, and harvesting.

Flagship Cuvées

The estate's main cuvée is Clos La Madeleine. This red wine comes from a grape variety blend dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc. The winemaking process includes meticulous sorting of the hand-harvested grapes. It reveals delicate fruity and floral aromas.

Vinification and Ageing

Harvesting is performed by hand. Vinification takes place in wooden and stainless steel vats. The vats are filled manually. Ageing takes place entirely in new oak barrels.
