An overview of the Bordeaux appellation Graves Supérieures, its key characteristics, and food pairings.

The terroir
The Graves Supérieures appellation is situated south of Bordeaux, in the northern part of the Graves vineyard area on the Left Bank of the Garonne. The soils are typically composed of gravel, sand, and clay—characteristic of the Graves region. This composition provides the vines with a balanced water supply and encourages the steady, progressive ripening of the grapes.
The wines
Graves Supérieures are exclusively sweet or semi-sweet white wines. They are crafted predominantly from the grape varieties Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, the very same varieties used for the wines of Sauternes and Barsac. Sémillon contributes richness and roundness, Sauvignon Blanc imparts freshness and aromatic vibrancy, while Muscadelle adds a delicate floral touch. These wines frequently reveal notes of candied fruit, honey, and blossom.
Food pairings
Graves Supérieures wines are ideally enjoyed as an aperitif, where their sweetness and aromatic complexity awaken the palate. They also pair elegantly with foie gras, blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Bleu d'Auvergne, as well as an array of fruit desserts and tarts. Their balance between sugar and acidity lends itself to a wide variety of gastronomic matches.
