History and Philosophy

The history of Château Cos Labory is closely tied to the Cos hill, from which it takes part of its name. François Labory owned the estate until 1845, before Louis Gaspard d’Estournel acquired it in 1847. The estate joined the Grands Crus Classés of the 1855 classification as a Cinquième Cru Classé. The Audoy family had owned the winegrowing estate since 1922, prior to its acquisition by Michel Reybier and his family in 2023.

Vineyard management is traditional, with harvesting carried out either by hand or mechanically. The estate is certified HVE 3.

Flagship Cuvées

The estate’s Grand Vin is Château Cos Labory. It is crafted from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, with variations depending on the vintage—for instance, 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot for the 2018 vintage. These red wines are well-balanced and powerful, displaying great concentration. Ageing can last sixteen months in oak barrels, with up to 50% new oak.
The estate also produces a second wine, Le Saint Estèphe de Cos Labory, as well as the Charme de Cos Labory cuvée, crafted from young vines. Another cuvée called Château Andron Blanquet is also produced, featuring a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Vinification and Ageing

Vinification is carried out using traditional methods in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with low-temperature fermentations and occasionally without added sulphur. The wines are aged in oak barrels, with varying proportions of new wood. For example, ageing for the Grand Vin can last sixteen months with 50% new barrels. Wines crafted from younger vines may be aged in two-wine barrels (second-fill casks).
