Saint-Estèphe
38 estates listed in the Saint-Estèphe appellation (Médoc)
Saint-Estèphe, an appellation in the Médoc, is renowned for its structured red wines with exceptional ageing potential.

The terroir
The Saint-Estèphe appellation is situated on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary, in the northern part of the Médoc. Its terroir is characterised by soils composed predominantly of gravel, sand, and clay, often with a clay-limestone base. The presence of clay near the surface is a distinctive feature that ensures excellent water retention—a vital asset during dry periods. This composition imparts distinct structure and longevity to the wines.
The wines
Saint-Estèphe exclusively produces red wines. The permitted grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Carmenère. Saint-Estèphe wines are celebrated for their robust and concentrated style. Often marked by firm tannins in their youth, they mellow over time to reveal remarkable aromatic complexity. Four Saint-Estèphe estates were ranked as Grands Crus in the 1855 classification.
Food pairing
Given their structure and tannins, the wines of Saint-Estèphe pair naturally with richly flavoured dishes. They are an ideal match for roasted or grilled red meats, such as beef and lamb. Feathered and furred game also complement these wines wonderfully. After several years of ageing, they can be enjoyed alongside mature hard cheeses. Decanting can prove highly beneficial for younger vintages.
