Château Léognan crafts red wines under the Pessac-Léognan appellation, as well as white and rosé wines under the Graves appellation. The grape varieties used for the reds are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, whilst the white wines blend Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle. Flagship cuvées include the reds Château Léognan, Le Calice de Léognan, Les Sarments de Léognan, and Cuvée Phoenix. The whites include Le Blanc and L'Eclat. The estate also produces a rosé wine.
What are the soil characteristics of the Château Léognan vineyard?
The Château Léognan vineyard covers 6 hectares of diverse terroir. It features Tertiary-era sands and gravels, gravel mounds resting on a clay-limestone bedrock, and sandy gravels. This soil diversity contributes to the complexity of the estate's wines. Harvesting is carried out by hand with rigorous sorting, first in the vineyard and then in the cellar.
What is the history of Château Léognan and who is the current owner?
The history of Château Léognan begins in the 17th century with the construction of its longhouse. After belonging to Mathieu Seurin and Emma in the 19th century, the property was acquired in 2007 by the Miecaze family, who settled there in 2008 and remain the current owners. Since 2023, the estate has developed its wine tourism offering in partnership with BMF Hospitality, providing accommodation, wellness areas, and local gastronomy.
How does Château Léognan vinify and age its wines?
Vinification at Château Léognan is carried out parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve the expression of each terroir and grape variety. Red wines such as Château Léognan are aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels. Cuvée Phoenix undergoes vinification in demi-muids and extended ageing for 16 to 24 months in new barrels. The white wines, Le Blanc and L'Eclat, are aged on their lees for 2 to 3 months—in French oak barrels for Le Blanc and in vats for L'Eclat.

The vineyard (terroir)

Château Léognan's vineyard covers an area of 6 hectares. Soils vary from plot to plot, featuring Tertiary-era sands and gravels, gravel mounds resting on a clay-limestone bedrock, and sandy gravels. Harvesting is carried out by hand in small crates across the entire estate, with an initial sorting in the vineyard followed by a double sorting in the cellar.

Planting density ranges from 6,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare. The average vine age is around 30 to 35 years for certain plots, whilst others, planted in 2009, are younger. The Phoenix cuvée comes from vines planted in 1989.

The grape varieties cultivated for red wines are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. For white wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle are grown.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées, each with a distinct profile.

Red wines in Pessac-Léognan

  • Château Léognan: This grand vin red is defined by structure and complexity derived from its barrel ageing. The grapes come from vines around 35 years old, planted on Tertiary-era sands and gravels.
  • Le Calice de Léognan: This second wine displays a more approachable profile, crafted from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged in French oak barrels, it offers an ageing potential of up to 10 years.
  • Les Sarments de Léognan: Crafted with no added sulphur, this cuvée highlights vibrant fruit character. Sourced from vines planted in 2009 on sandy gravels, it has an ageing potential of 10 to 15 years.
  • Cuvée Phoenix: Sourced from 1989 vines on gravel mounds, this prestige cuvée undergoes prolonged ageing in new French oak barrels, endowing it with great intensity and an ageing potential of up to 25 years.

White wines in Graves

  • Le Blanc: This white wine is a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, sourced from roughly 30-year-old vines planted on sandy gravels. It is aged on its lees in French oak barrels.
  • L'Eclat: Another Graves white wine, dominated by Sauvignon Blanc and complemented by Sémillon and Muscadelle. It is aged on its lees in vats, enhancing aromatic freshness.

Rosé wines in Graves

  • The estate also produces a fresh and fruity rosé wine.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification at Château Léognan is parcel-by-parcel in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, preserving the authentic expression of each terroir and grape variety.

  • For Château Léognan (red), vinification includes crushing and punching down (pigeage). Ageing takes place over 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, with 30% to 50% new oak.
  • The red cuvées Le Calice de Léognan and Les Sarments de Léognan are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Le Calice is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
  • Cuvée Phoenix undergoes integral vinification in demi-muids and extended ageing for 16 to 24 months in new French oak barrels.
  • For the white wines Le Blanc and L'Eclat, parcel-by-parcel vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Le Blanc is aged on its lees for 2 to 3 months in French oak barrels, whilst L'Eclat is aged on its lees for 2 to 3 months in vats.
