Identity

Château de Rochemorin is located in Martillac, in the Gironde département. The estate is owned by Famille André Lurton.

History and Philosophy

The vineyard at Château de Rochemorin was established in 1520 by Jean de Amelin. In the early 17th century, it was owned by the Pesnel family. The last heiress of this family married Jacques de Montesquieu in 1686, father of Charles Louis de Secondat, the future Baron de Montesquieu and Lord of La Brède, who became the owner of the estate in the 18th century. In 1919, the property was acquired by Établissements Armand Beaumartin, and then by the Blancan family around 1940.

In 1973, André Lurton acquired Château de Rochemorin. A new cellar was built in 2005. The estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE).

The Appellations

Château de Rochemorin produces both red and white wines under the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Direct sales are available at the estate, as well as at the boutique of Château La Louvière and at the reception of Château Bonnet. Vineyard tours and tastings are hosted at the Château La Louvière boutique. Prior booking is recommended. The opening hours of the Château La Louvière shop are Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00. The boutique is also open on Saturdays from April to October. Cellar visits, tastings and workshops are organised at Château La Louvière.

The estate caters to corporate events and team-building sessions, offering a dedicated meeting room. Visits are also possible during various annual events. Spoken languages are English and French.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The vineyard covers a total area of 68 hectares. Red grape varieties account for 51 hectares and white grape varieties for 17 hectares. The vineyard is situated on one of the highest slopes in Martillac, at an altitude of 56 metres, and enjoys a due-south exposure.

The terroir boasts great soil diversity. For the red vines, there are deep gravels as well as gravel over a clay subsoil. For the white vines, the soils consist of gravel over shell marl (faluns) and gravel over a clay subsoil.

The red grape varieties comprise 48% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec. For the white vineyard, the blend is 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon. The average vine age was 20 years in 2010.

The estate offers several red and white cuvées under the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Château de Rochemorin Rouge

This red wine is crafted from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. It is distinguished by its elegance and finesse, revealing aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, spices and smoky nuances. This wine offers an ageing potential of more than 10 years.

Château de Rochemorin Blanc

This cuvée is produced from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. This white wine is renowned for being mineral and expressive.

Château Coucheroy Rouge and Blanc

These wines are also crafted under the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Noroît Rouge

This is a single-varietal micro-cuvée produced exclusively from Petit Verdot. Production is limited to approximately 1,200 bottles.

Vinification and Ageing

Harvesting is carried out both by hand and by machine, with mechanical sorting. Red wine vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with parcel-by-parcel fermentation. Ageing for the red wines is conducted in Bordeaux oak barrels for approximately 12 months, with 30 to 40% new wood. The white wines are aged on fine lees in barrels.
