Château Lafargue

Identity

Château Lafargue is a family winegrowing estate located in the commune of Martillac, Gironde. The property is currently managed by Carole Peyrout, representing the third generation, alongside her husband Lionel Peyrout. The technical team also includes Philippe Simonnet as cellar master and Fabien Faget as consulting oenologist.

History and Philosophy

The history of Château Lafargue dates back to 1920, when the Peyrout family acquired it. Initially, the property was dedicated to market gardening and floriculture, notably distinguishing itself with lily-of-the-valley cultivation from the 1950s. It was in 1983 that Jean-Pierre Leymarie, Carole Peyrout's father, decided to shift the activity towards winegrowing, marking a gradual conversion of the estate. In 2016, Carole Peyrout, who was previously a social worker, joined the property and took over its management. The estate is committed to environmentally friendly practices, holding a High Environmental Value (HVE) level 3 certification obtained in 2015. It practices grassing between the rows and uses biocontrol products on nearly a third of its vineyard. Château Lafargue is a member of the Vignerons Indépendants de France.

The Appellations

Château Lafargue produces all of its wines under the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The vines are spread across the communes of Martillac and Saint-Médard-d’Eyrans, south of Bordeaux, in an environment surrounded by major names within the appellation.

Visits are by appointment or during specific events such as open days. The estate does not offer accommodation services (bed and breakfast or gîtes).

The Vineyard (Terroir)

Château Lafargue's vineyard covers an area of 18.5 hectares. The plots are planted on clay-limestone soils, characteristic of the region. Nearly half of the surface is farmed under lease. The red grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (approximately 60% of the estate's overall grape varieties). For white wines, the vineyard is mainly composed of Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris.

Key Cuvées

The estate offers a range of wines that includes reds and whites. The Château Lafargue is the main red cuvée. The Château Lafargue Prestige cuvée is a red wine benefiting from barrel ageing. The second red wine is the Dauphin du Château Lafargue. For whites, the Château Lafargue Blanc Cuvée Alexandre is crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris. The estate also produces a red cuvée, Château Lafargue Origine 1920. In 2022, to celebrate its centenary, a special cuvée was released, the Château Lafargue Cuvée Centenaire, produced in approximately 3500 bottles and crafted through whole-barrel vinification in 400-litre casks.

Vinification and Ageing

The red wines, particularly the Prestige cuvée, benefit from barrel ageing that can last up to sixteen months. The Cuvée Centenaire was specifically vinified and aged entirely in 400-litre casks.
