Château Lafargue

Identity

Château Lafargue is a family-run winegrowing estate. Located in Martillac, it is owned by the Leymarie-Peyrout family. Carole Peyrout is the current owner, and her husband, Lionel Peyrout, also takes part in operations. The estate collaborates with Philippe Simonnet as cellar master and Fabien Faget as consultant oenologist.

History and Philosophy

The history of Château Lafargue dates back to 1920, when the family acquired the property. Originally, the farm was dedicated to market gardening and floriculture, notably taking up lily of the valley cultivation in the 1950s. In 1983, Jean-Pierre Leymarie, Carole Peyrout’s father, inherited two hectares of vines and embarked on a gradual conversion of the holding to winegrowing, a process spanning some twenty years. Carole Peyrout joined the estate in 2016, succeeding her father. As part of its environmental approach, Château Lafargue maintains grass cover between the vine rows and uses organic or biocontrol products across part of its vineyard. The estate has held level 3 Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification since 2015 and is a member of the Vignerons Indépendants de France.

The Appellations

Château Lafargue produces wines under the Pessac-Léognan appellation. It also offers a cuvée under the Fronsac appellation.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Lafargue vineyard covers 18.5 hectares, with a significant proportion under leasehold. The plots are situated across the communes of Martillac and Saint-Médard-d’Eyrans. The soil is clay-limestone. The red grape varieties consist of 60% Merlot, complemented by other varieties. For white wines, the plantings are predominantly Sauvignon Blanc (81%) alongside Sauvignon Gris.

Flagship Cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées, in both red and white.

In red, Château Lafargue is the main cuvée. Château Lafargue Prestige is another red cuvée, often characterised by extended ageing. Château Lafargue Origine 1920 is a special red cuvée, crafted to celebrate the estate’s heritage. The estate also produces a red second wine, Dauphin du Château Lafargue.

In white, Château Lafargue Blanc Cuvée Alexandre is crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, delivering wines of significant production volume.

Vinification and Ageing

The vinification of certain cuvées, such as the special Centenaire cuvée, is carried out entirely in 400-litre barrels. Red wines such as Château Lafargue Prestige benefit from barrel ageing lasting around sixteen months.
