Château Devise d'Ardilley is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saint-Laurent-Médoc, in Gironde. It is owned by Madeleine and Jacques Philippe.

History and philosophy

The estate was established in 1991. In 2000, the vineyard was taken over by its current owners, Madeleine and Jacques Philippe. Château Devise d'Ardilley is recognised as a Cru Bourgeois. Committed to environmentally friendly viticulture, the estate achieved organic certification (Agriculture Biologique) in 2018 and also practises conservation grazing.

Appellations

The estate's parcels are located in the commune of Saint-Laurent-Médoc, in the heart of the Médoc wine region. Château Devise d'Ardilley produces wines under the Haut-Médoc Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP).

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard covers an area of 10 hectares. It is planted on gravel and clay-limestone soils, set atop a gravel ridge overlooking the commune of Saint-Laurent-Médoc. The estate's primary grape varieties are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Petit Verdot was introduced into the blend starting in 2004.

Signature cuvées

The estate's flagship wine is Château Devise d'Ardilley AOP Haut-Médoc – Cru Bourgeois, a still red wine. The property also offers a second wine, La Petite Devise AOP Haut-Médoc. The winery is equipped with 12 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats of varying sizes (from 19 to 150 hl). Winemaking techniques include cold maceration, and part of the ageing is carried out in amphorae.

Vinification and ageing

The vat room at Château Devise d'Ardilley has a total capacity of 1,000 hl, divided across 12 stainless steel vats ranging from 19 to 150 hl. These vats are equipped with temperature-control systems. Winemaking practices include cold pre-fermentation maceration. The wines are partly aged in amphorae.
