Château Larose Trintaudon

Identity

Château Larose Trintaudon is a winegrowing estate located in Saint-Laurent-Médoc, in the Gironde department. It is part of Vignobles de Larose, owned by the Allianz Group since 1986. Management is overseen by Lorraine Watrin, alongside Brice Amouroux as Deputy Managing Director and Benjamin Bruneau as Head of Winemaking.

History and Philosophy

The original château was built in 1884 by Count Ernest de Lahens. Since its acquisition by Allianz in 1986, the estate has pursued an ambitious environmental responsibility policy. In 2003, it achieved ISO 14001 certification, later supplemented by Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE 3) certification and an "Exemplary" CSR rating. Conversion to organic viticulture is currently underway. A major €25 million renovation project began in 2021 and spanned four years. Designed by the architectural firm BPM Architectes, the project created more than 10,000 square metres of new facilities, including eco-designed vat rooms and cellars.

Appellations

Château Larose Trintaudon primarily produces wines under the Haut-Médoc Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. It is classified as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur.

Winemaking and Ageing

Winemaking follows traditional methods in concrete and stainless steel vats. The estate uses concrete vats equipped with integrated heating and cooling systems. Maceration lasts around three weeks. Ageing takes place in oak barrels for 12 to 14 months, with 20% to 25% new oak. The new facilities include temperature-controlled barrel cellars and experimental vats for micro-vinifications.

Practical Information

Château Larose Trintaudon is located on Route de Pauillac, 33112 Saint-Laurent-Médoc. While the estate is currently closed for works, it offers guided and self-guided tours featuring an immersive scenography, the discovery of eco-designed cellars, and a rooftop. The tours are accessible to people with reduced mobility and can be booked with or without prior reservation depending on the season. The estate holds the Tourisme & Handicap and Vignobles et Découvertes labels.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The vineyard of Château Larose Trintaudon spans a total surface area of 210 hectares, including 202 hectares within the Haut-Médoc appellation. The average vine age is 28 years. The terroir is defined by fine gravel, gravelly sand, and clay-limestone soils. Planting density is approximately 6,600 vines per hectare.

The main grape varieties planted for red wines are 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. The estate practices sustainable viticulture, without chemical weedkillers or synthetic pesticides, and engages in various environmental initiatives such as hedgerow planting and optimised water and energy management.

Signature Cuvées

The estate's flagship wine is Château Larose-Trintaudon, a red wine from AOC Haut-Médoc. The blend generally strikes a balance between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Petit Verdot. Les Hauts de Trintaudon is the estate's second wine.
