Château Falfas

Identity

Château Falfas is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Bayon-sur-Gironde, in Gironde. The estate is managed by Bruno Coche and Thiên Coche Tran.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Falfas is marked by an ancient winegrowing tradition stretching back several centuries. As early as the 14th and 15th centuries, the estate’s wines were exported to the court of the Edwards of England. Historically, the estate belonged to the Lords of Lansac, followed by the Sires de Riveaux in the 17th century.

The château itself was built in 1612 in the Louis XIII architectural style. The name Falfas comes from Gaillard de Falfas, a former senior president of the Parliament of Guyenne. The estate’s importance is also attested by an 1827 guide, which listed it among the leading growths of the area alongside Château Tajac, both situated in the commune of Bayon.

Château Falfas embraced biodynamic winegrowing early on, adopting these practices in 1989. It is certified by BIODYVIN, reflecting its approach to protecting the environment and vineyard biodiversity.

Appellations

Château Falfas produces its wines under the Côtes de Bourg Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC). The vineyard parcels are entirely dedicated to this appellation.

Flagship wines

The estate’s main wine is Château Falfas. This red wine, produced in the Côtes de Bourg appellation, has an annual production of around 40,000 bottles.

Winemaking and ageing

Château Falfas wines are aged in barrels. The estate does not purchase grapes from outside sources to make its wines. The average yield recorded for the 2014 harvest was 30 hectolitres per hectare.

The cellar shop is open from 9 am to noon and from 2 pm to 6 pm. Estate visits are available by appointment. Château Falfas sells its wines at the estate and by mail order. The estate does not offer restaurant or accommodation facilities.

The vineyard and terroir

The Château Falfas vineyard covers 20 hectares. It lies on one of the hillsides of Bayon-sur-Gironde, close to the Gironde estuary. Its terroir consists mainly of clay-limestone soils.

The vines have an average age of around 35 years. Merlot accounts for 55% of the plantings, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Malbec (5%). Harvesting is carried out both by hand and mechanically.
