Château Grand Mayne

Identity

Château Grand Mayne is a family-owned winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saint-Émilion, in the Gironde department. The estate is owned by the Nony family, represented by Jean-Antoine and Damien Nony. The château's manor house is a listed historic monument.

History and philosophy

The historical origins of Château Grand Mayne date back to the 12th century, with the manor house constructed in the 15th century. The Laveau family owned the property during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1934, Jean-Antoine Nony's grandfather acquired the estate, which has remained in the hands of the Nony family ever since—spanning nearly a century. The estate is dedicated to environmentally friendly viticulture, certified by Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE).

Appellations

Château Grand Mayne produces wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, officially recognised as a Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Grand Mayne spans 17 hectares within a 19-hectare property. It benefits from diverse soils: a clay-limestone hillside alongside foot-of-slope plots composed of clay to the south and sand over clay to the west. The average age of the vines is close to 35 years. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (66%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (32%) and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (2%). The hillside vines are grass-covered between the rows. Harvesting is carried out by hand.

Flagship cuvées

Château Grand Mayne crafts a principal cuvée, Château Grand Mayne, made from a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled wooden and stainless-steel vats, followed by 18 months of ageing in barrels, 60% of which are new oak and 40% one-year-old. A second wine is also produced, named Filia de Grand Mayne, previously known as Les Plantes du Mayne (from 1986 to 2007, with the name change occurring in 2008). This cuvée is sourced from the clay-sandy foot-of-slope terroirs to the south and west, as well as the estate's younger vines. Its blend consists of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled wooden and stainless-steel vats, with 14 months of ageing in barrels, 70% of which are new oak.
