Château Lescalle is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Macau, in the Gironde département. The property is owned by the Tessandier family.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Lescalle dates back to the late 19th century, with the construction of the château in 1875 by Emmanuel Tessandier, born in 1841 and founder of the estate. The vineyard experienced a major halt in production in 1954, when the vines were uprooted. The estate's viticultural revival began in 1983 with the replanting of the vines. Today, Château Lescalle is committed to a sustainable viticulture approach.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Lescalle vineyard covers an area of 34 hectares. The soils are characterised by clay palus. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (65%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Cabernet Franc (10%), and Petit Verdot (5%).

Flagship cuvées

The estate's primary cuvée, Château Lescalle, is a red wine crafted from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. This wine stands out for its structure, offering an estimated cellaring potential of 5 to 10 years. The estate has received more than ten medals at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris since 1987 for its wines.

Vinification and ageing

The vinification of the main cuvée of Château Lescalle follows a precise process. Parcel selection is carried out, followed by manual sorting of the grapes and complete destemming. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats at around 28°C. During this stage, three pump-overs are performed daily. The maceration is long, lasting three to four weeks. The wine then undergoes one to three rackings and egg white fining. Ageing lasts twelve months, with 60% of the wine aged in French oak barrels. Among these barrels, 20% to 40% are renewed as new oak each year, depending on the vintage.
