Identity

Château Mazails is a winegrowing estate located in Saint-Yzans-de-Médoc, in the Gironde département. The property is run by the Chacun family, currently represented by Grégory, Mickaël, and Vanessa Chacun, who form the fourth generation at the helm of the estate. Philippe Chacun is also listed as producer/owner.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Mazails has been intertwined with the Chacun family for several decades. Gabriel Chacun acquired the property in 1931. He was succeeded by Jacques Chacun in 1942. Philippe Chacun subsequently took over in 1986, taking the reins of the estate in the 1980s and expanding the vineyard area. The Chacun family developed the estate into a prominent wine property in the region. The château holds the Cru Bourgeois classification, a distinction established as early as 1932. The estate's cellars date back to 1777. The vineyard is managed according to the principles of integrated viticulture (culture raisonnée).

Château Mazails produces wines under the Médoc appellation, with the Cru Bourgeois classification.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Mazails covers an area of 49 hectares. It is situated on a rolling gravel ridge overlooking the Gironde estuary. The soils are clay-gravel, featuring gravels with a clay matrix combined with the clay-limestone soils of Saint-Germain-d'Esteuil. The grape varieties consist of 70% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, and 5% Malbec. Alongside its winegrowing operations, the estate also raises Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle.

Flagship cuvées

The estate's main cuvée, Château Mazails, is a still red wine classified as Cru Bourgeois. The wines are described as round, fleshy, and flavourful, characterised by a well-defined structure. Ageing takes place in oak barrels.
