Médoc

Terroir

The Médoc appellation is located in the northern part of the Bordeaux peninsula, on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary. Its landscape is generally flat, dominated by gently rolling gravel ridges (croupes). The soils consist predominantly of Garonne and Pyrenean gravel, sand, and clay, providing natural drainage ideal for winegrowing. The climate is temperate oceanic, benefiting from the moderating influence of the estuary.

The wines

Médoc wines are exclusively red. The permitted grape varieties are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and, to a lesser extent, Petit Verdot and Malbec. These wines are characterised by their tannic structure, ageing potential, and aromas of red fruit, cedar, and spices. While the appellation contains no 1855 Crus Classés, it is home to many prestigious Crus Bourgeois.

Food pairings

Médoc red wines pair beautifully with a wide variety of dishes. Their structure and tannins make them natural partners for grilled or roasted red meats, such as beef or lamb. They also pair seamlessly with rich casseroles, game, and selected hard cheeses. Their complexity unfolds after a few years of cellar ageing, delivering a much more nuanced tasting experience.
