Château Peyrabon
Updated on
Château Peyrabon, owned by the Castéja heirs in Saint-Sauveur, produces red wines in Haut-Médoc and Pauillac. Its 52-hectare vineyard is cultivated using sustainable viticulture methods and is predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Identity
Château Peyrabon is situated in the commune of Saint-Sauveur. It is currently owned by the Castéja heirs. Xavier Michelet manages the winegrowing estate and oversees vinification. The estate benefits from the guidance of consultant oenologist Éric Boissenot and the expertise of cellar master Éric Pinto Guerra, while Jacky Castan serves as vineyard manager.
History and Philosophy
The history of Château Peyrabon dates back to the 18th century, with its first recorded mention documented in 1766. In 1821, the manor house was enhanced with four towers. Queen Victoria is said to have visited the property to attend a harp concert.
From 1958 to 1998, the estate belonged to the Babeau family. Following a severe frost in 1956, an almost complete replanting of the vineyard was undertaken. In 1977, the property expanded through the acquisition of parcels from Château Liversan.
In 1998, Château Peyrabon was acquired by Patrick Bernard, head of the wine merchant Millésima. Since 2022, the estate has been owned by the Castéja heirs.
Regarding the classification of its wines, former owner Arnaud Armand Roux originally described his wine as a 'Cru Classé', contesting designations such as 'Bourgeois ordinaire' or 'Cru Bourgeois'. He eventually accepted the classification of 'Bon Bourgeois' or 'Cru Bourgeois Supérieur'. The 'Cru Bourgeois' designation first appeared on labels in 1932. The estate practises sustainable viticulture.

The Vineyard (Terroir)
The Château Peyrabon vineyard spans an area of 52 hectares. The soils consist of sandy gravel over clay and clay-limestone subsoils. The estate is situated on a gravel outcrop. The average age of the vines is 23 years.
The main grape varieties grown at the estate are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for a significant proportion at 71.5% of the plantings, followed by Merlot at 25% and Petit Verdot at 3.5%.
Harvesting is carried out both by hand and mechanically.
Flagship Cuvées
The estate's grand vin is Château Peyrabon, a red wine whose blend varies according to the vintage but is predominantly built on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This wine typically offers a well-defined structure and aromas of red and black fruit, with complexity imparted by barrel ageing.
The estate also offers Château La Fleur Peyrabon, a Cru Bourgeois, and Château Pierbone. A specific cuvée, Château Peyrabon Végan by Château Pierbone, is also produced.
Vinification and Ageing
The wines of Château Peyrabon are aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, with one quarter of the casks renewed each year (25% new oak). For the Château La Fleur Peyrabon cuvée, ageing is carried out with 50% new oak. Average production is 120,000 bottles for Château Peyrabon and 32,500 bottles for La Fleur Peyrabon. Total production across all wines reaches 340,000 standard 75cl bottles.
