Château Pouget

Identity

Château Pouget is a winegrowing estate located in Cantenac, in the Gironde. It is owned by the Guillemet family. Château Pouget is classified as an 1855 Quatrième Cru Classé.

History and philosophy

Château Pouget boasts a long-standing history of acclaim for its wines, having been included among the 1855 Grands Crus Classés since the classification's inception. In the 18th century, the Maréchal-Duc de Richelieu bestowed his coat of arms and a quatrain upon Château Pouget. The facade of one of its cellars was converted into a residence during the second half of the 19th century. The Guillemet family acquired the estate in the early 20th century.

The wines of Château Pouget are produced under the Margaux Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée.

Flagship wines

Château Pouget produces red wines. Fruit from younger vines is generally dedicated to the blends of the second wines, delivering lighter, more fruit-forward, and approachable profiles.

Winemaking and ageing

Vinification and ageing are managed plot by plot. Fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel vats, accompanied by frequent pump-overs and maceration periods ranging from 8 to 35 days. A portion of the malolactic fermentation occurs in barrels. The main wines are aged in French oak barrels (merrain) for a period of 12 to 24 months.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard at Château Pouget covers a planted area of 10 hectares. The soils are characterised by lean gravels. The average age of the vines is over 35 years, reaching around 45 years. The grape varieties comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), and Cabernet Franc (10%). Harvesting is carried out by hand.
