The Vineyard (Terroir)
The vineyard of Château Roland La Garde covers 39 hectares. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, varying from clay-loam to sandy-clay layers. The average age of the vines is 30 years. Cultivation practices include gentle soil tilling, alternate-row grass cover, and double Guyot pruning. Harvesting is carried out by hand.
The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (74%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Malbec (6%). The average yield is 45 hl/ha.

Vinification and Ageing
Vinification relies on spontaneous natural fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wines undergo ageing in vats and barrels, lasting up to eighteen months for specific cuvées.

Un Blaye en biodynamie à découvrir : le château Roland La Garde
L'article de juin 2024 de Bonum Vinum présente une visite au Château Roland La Garde, où le vigneron Guillaume Martin, rencontré précédemment aux salons Millésime Bio et La Levée de la Loire à Angers, cultive ses vignes en biodynamie. La propriété familiale Martin se compose de deux domaines : le Château Roland La Garde, s'étendant sur 32 hectares dédiés aux cépages rouges (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec), et le Château Ste Luce-Bellevue, acquis en 2002, couvrant 10 hectares avec une majorité de rouges et une parcelle de blanc (Sauvignon, Muscadelle). Les deux domaines mettent l'accent sur la biodiversité, avec une parcelle de 3 hectares au Château Roland La Garde réservée aux céréales, aux haies et aux arbres fruitiers, favorisant ainsi la présence d'orchidées et de tulipes sauvages. Le Château Roland La Garde a obtenu la certification biologique en 2012 et la certification biodynamique Demeter en 2014. La vinification se caractérise par des rendements maîtrisés (35 à 40 hl/ha), l'utilisation de levures naturelles et un élevage en barriques, avec jusqu'à 30% de bois neuf. Trois cuvées sont également élevées en amphores de terre cuite pendant 12 à 18 mois.
