Château Simon

Identity

Château Simon is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Barsac. Today, it is owned by Anne-Laure and Pauline Dufour. Anne-Laure Dufour-Bonnard is the estate's winemaker, while Pauline Dufour-Descamps is in charge of sales and marketing. Dominique Bonnard manages the vineyard.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Simon dates back to 1814. Originally a mixed-farming property, the estate gradually specialised in viticulture over time, drawing on two centuries of expertise. Anne-Laure Dufour joined the estate in 2008, Dominique Bonnard in 2014, and Pauline Dufour in 2015. Château Simon has been committed to the Vignerons Indépendants movement for nearly three decades.

The vineyard (terroir)

Château Simon's vineyard covers 33 hectares. It is located in Barsac, in the Simon district. The terroir is predominantly clay-limestone, resting on Asteria limestone bedrock. The cultivated grape varieties include Sémillon, Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Key cuvées

Château Simon offers a range of 11 wines, including the "Cuvée exceptionnelle" under the Sauternes appellation. This wine is crafted from Sémillon (80%), Sauvignon Blanc (18%), and Muscadelle (2%). Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand through successive selective pickings to gather only overripe berries, particularly those affected by Botrytis cinerea. Production for this cuvée is around 10,000 bottles. The estate also markets wines under the Graves appellation (red and white), as well as Bordeaux (white, rosé, and red) and Bordeaux Supérieur.

Vinification and ageing

For the Sauternes "Cuvée exceptionnelle", ageing takes place in new oak barrels for 18 months.
