Identity

Château Vauthier Maziere is owned by the Vauthier family, now in its fifth generation at the helm. The winegrowing estate is situated in the commune of Saint-Émilion.

History and philosophy

The Vauthier family's history in the Bordeaux vineyards dates back to the acquisition of Château Moulin Saint Georges in 1921. Later, in 2014, the estate incorporated Château La Clotte, a property with winemaking heritage reaching back to the 16th century and originally tied to the de Grailly family. The name “La Clotte” derives from the Gascon dialect, referring to a small cave dwelling.

Appellations

The estate produces wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation for its Château Moulin Saint Georges and Château La Clotte cuvées. The parcels of Château Moulin Saint Georges are located in the southern part of Saint-Émilion near the village entrance, facing Château Ausone and adjacent to Château La Clotte.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Vauthier Maziere spans a recorded surface area of 4 hectares for Château La Clotte and 8 hectares for Château Moulin Saint Georges. The soils at Château La Clotte are characterised by limestone plateaux and clay-limestone hillsides, while those at Château Moulin Saint Georges are predominantly clay-limestone. The vines benefit from a southern aspect and have an average age of around fifty years. Planting density ranges from a minimum of 5,500 vines per hectare up to 12,600 vines per hectare for Château Moulin Saint Georges, and stands at 6,000 vines per hectare for Château La Clotte. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (approximately 85%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (15%).

Flagship cuvées

Château Vauthier Maziere notably produces the wines Château La Clotte and Château Moulin Saint Georges. The blend for these wines consists of approximately 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. They are crafted for extensive ageing potential.

Vinification and ageing

Winemaking at Château Vauthier Maziere relies on plot-by-plot selection and manual harvesting. The grapes undergo meticulous sorting before being gravity-fed into the cellar. Maceration takes place in stainless-steel vats, with manual punching down by cap submersion. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in oak barrels. Ageing lasts approximately 18 months in barrels, which are new for the wines of Château La Clotte and 100% new oak for those of Château Moulin Saint Georges.
