The vineyard (terroir)
The vineyard spans 20 hectares. The average age of the vines is over forty years, with a planting density of more than 7,500 vines per hectare. The estate's soil types include limestone, gravel, clay, clay-limestone, gravelly and siliceous soils. Vineyard management relies on manual techniques such as pruning, vine tying, trellis maintenance, de-suckering and canopy lifting. Ripeness is monitored parcel by parcel about a month before harvest through regular sampling.
The grape varieties planted are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot noir, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Flagship cuvées
Château Vieux Robin produces several cuvées. The flagship cuvée, Château Vieux Robin, accounts for 70% of the planted area. It is an elegant, structured red wine characterised by its freshness and fine tannins, offering good ageing potential. The blend for this cuvée was 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot for the 2015 vintage.
The Château Les Anguilleys cuvée is also a Cru Bourgeois and accounts for 30% of the vineyard area. It is a harmonious, delicate red wine delivering spicy, fruity notes.
The estate also offers two second wines, Cuvée Classique de Vieux Robin and Cuvée Air de Vieux Robin, both crafted from a blend of younger parcels.
A special cuvée, Réserve Bois de Lunier, is a selection aged in new oak barrels. The estate also produces a white wine, Blanc de Lunier, which is 100% Sauvignon Blanc for the 2014 vintage.
Vinification and ageing
Ageing for the principal red wine, Château Vieux Robin, lasts eighteen months in barrels. For the Bois de Lunier cuvée, ageing also takes place in barrels, featuring barrel malolactic fermentation and a documented 40% proportion of new oak for certain vintages.
