Château Anthonic

Identity

Château Anthonic is a winegrowing estate located in Moulis-en-Médoc, in the Gironde. It is owned by SCEA Pierre Cordonnier (Ch. Anthonic) and managed by Jean-Baptiste Cordonnier. The technical team includes cellar master Lucie Mançais and consulting oenologist Éric Boissenot. Théophile Cordonnier also holds managerial responsibilities at the estate.

History and Philosophy

Château Anthonic was acquired by the Cordonnier family in 1977, when Pierre Cordonnier purchased the estate. The name “Anthonic” was bestowed upon the château in 1924. Jean Cordonnier took over the management of the estate in 1993, the same year Jean-Baptiste Cordonnier took the helm. A new cellar was built in 2008. In 2022, the estate acquired Château Lestage-Darquier Grand Poujeaux.

The estate is committed to an agro-ecological approach. Conversion to organic viticulture began in 2016, achieving certification in 2019. Château Anthonic is also a pioneer in the Médoc for viticultural agroforestry, a practice that incorporates hedges and trees alongside the vines. This approach aims to foster living soils, promote biodiversity, and enhance the vines' natural resistance to disease. In 2017, new vine plantings were carried out, integrating trees within and around the parcels. Agroforestry is implemented so that trees nourish the soil, benefit biodiversity, help combat certain vine diseases, and buffer microclimates in the face of global warming.

Appellations

The estate produces wines under the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation.

Winemaking and Ageing

For the primary red wine, ageing takes place in oak barrels. The “Le rouge dans les arbres” cuvée is aged in amphorae. The estate built a new cellar in 2008.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

Château Anthonic’s vineyard covers a planted area of 32.8 hectares, with 32.2 hectares dedicated to red grape varieties and 0.6 hectares to white varieties. The total vineyard surface is 30 hectares. The vines have an average age of 20 years. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone (80%), complemented by gravel. The vineyard is criss-crossed by a network of ditches, bordered by copses and clusters of trees, and adjoins a deciduous forest, creating a diverse ecosystem. The estate features 6 km of hedges. Harvesting is carried out both by hand and mechanically.

The red grape varieties comprise:

• Merlot: 53%
• Cabernet Sauvignon: 35%
• Cabernet Franc: 8%
• Petit Verdot: 4%

The white grape varieties comprise:

• Bouysselet: 100%

Château Anthonic produces several cuvées, including:

• Château Anthonic: A red wine in AOC Moulis-en-Médoc, distinguished by a traditional blend.
• Château Lestage-Darquier Grand Poujeaux: Another red wine in AOC Moulis-en-Médoc.
• Le rouge dans les arbres: A Vin de France made from 100% Merlot, with no added sulphites, and aged in amphorae. It comes from vines farmed under organic viticulture and agroforestry.
• Le blanc dans les arbres: A Vin de France crafted from the Bouysselet grape variety, likewise sourced from vines cultivated under organic viticulture and agroforestry.
• Le rosé dans les arbres: A Vin de France sourced from vines cultivated under organic viticulture and agroforestry.

Other red cuvées include Moulis, Moulis cru bourgeois, and Moulis Les Aigles d'Anthonic. The range also features the Château La Grave de Guitignan cuvée.
