The terroir

Moulis-en-Médoc is an appellation d'origine contrôlée located in the Médoc, on the Left Bank of the Gironde. Its terroir is characterised by soils primarily composed of Günzian gravel, rolled pebbles, and clay-limestone. This geological diversity contributes to the complexity of the wines. The grape varieties, defined by the appellation specifications, mainly include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Franc is also permitted, bringing its distinctive quality to the aromatic profile. The proximity of the estuary influences the climate.

The wines

The wines of Moulis-en-Médoc are exclusively red wines. They are distinguished by their tannic structure, deep colour, and fruity, spicy aromas. Ageing lends them additional complexity, developing notes of forest floor and tobacco. Wines from this appellation are widely recognised for their balance and ageing potential. While the appellation is not part of the 1855 classification, it is home to several estates classified as Crus Bourgeois, a true hallmark of quality.

Food pairings

The wines of Moulis-en-Médoc pair well with a wide variety of dishes. Their structure and tannins make them ideal companions for grilled or roasted red meats, such as beef or lamb. They also pair wonderfully with feathered or furred game. Mature cheeses, particularly hard cheeses, can also be served alongside. A serving temperature of around 16–18°C is generally recommended to fully appreciate their aromatic and taste profile.
