Château Batailley

Identity

Château Batailley is a winegrowing estate located in Pauillac, in the Gironde department. It is owned by the Castéja family, represented by Philippe Castéja, and is part of the Borie-Manoux négociant house.

The technical team includes Didier Chadourne, vineyard manager since 2013, and Hugues Mathieu, cellar master since 2023. The consultant oenologists are Axel Marchal and Valérie Lavigne.

History and Philosophy

The presence of vines on the Château Batailley site is documented as early as the late 18th century. The estate took shape between the 16th and 18th centuries. In 1453, a battle of the Hundred Years' War—marking the French reconquest of Château Latour—is said to have taken place on these grounds, giving the estate its name.

The château's current parklands, designed in the 19th century, are the work of Barillet-Deschamps, landscape architect to Napoleon III. After being owned by the Pécholier family, the property was acquired by Daniel Guestier. In 1866, the Guestier heirs sold the estate.

The Borie-Castéja family acquired Château Batailley in 1924, and Francis and Marcel Borie took over its management in 1932. Today, the estate holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE 3) certification.

The Appellations

Château Batailley produces its wines under the Pauillac appellation. The estate is situated in the south-western sector of the Pauillac appellation.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

Château Batailley's vineyard extends over 62 hectares. It is established on deep, ancient Günz gravel soils composed of silica and sand. The planting density is approximately 8,500 vines per hectare.

The average age of the vines is around 40 years. The grape varieties are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), complemented by Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%). Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand.

Flagship Cuvées

The estate's grand vin is Château Batailley, a 5e Grand Cru Classé. It is a still red wine, crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon. Its colour is often described as a deep garnet, revealing aromas of dark berry fruit. It is crafted for prolonged ageing potential.

The estate also produces a second wine, Lions de Batailley, and a third wine, Pauillac de Batailley. These cuvées are sourced from the château's younger vines.

Vinification and Ageing

Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels and vats. Vinification lasts between 20 and 25 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats ranging in capacity from 100 to 130 hectolitres. Ageing is carried out in French oak barrels for at least 12 months, with 50 to 60% new oak.
