Identity

Château Haut-Batailley is a winegrowing estate located in Pauillac, Gironde. It is owned by the Cazes family, with Jean-Charles Cazes serving as Managing Director and Philippe Hiriberry as cellar master. The estate holds the Cinquième Grand Cru Classé de 1855 classification.

History and philosophy

The estate's name, Batailley, is believed to derive from a 15th-century battle of the Hundred Years' War fought on these lands. Acquired in 1818 by Daniel Guestier, the Batailley estate was later purchased by the Borie family in 1929. A family restructuring in 1939 led to its partition in 1941, giving rise to Château Haut-Batailley. Vines from Duhart-Milon were added in 1951.

The estate remained under the stewardship of the Borie family, notably led by Françoise de Brest-Borie, until 2017. That year, Château Haut-Batailley was acquired by the Cazes family, already owners of several estates across Bordeaux. This purchase marked a new chapter for the property, accompanied by the introduction of a new label in 2017 and the presentation of the first vintage under the Cazes era (2017) en primeur.

In terms of philosophy, the estate is committed to vineyard renewal and embraces agroforestry, having planted over 910 trees and shrubs across 14 different varieties in 2022.

Signature wines

The estate's flagship wine is Château Haut-Batailley, a still red wine crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon. It typically displays a solid tannic structure and aromatic richness characteristic of the Pauillac appellation. The estate also produces a second wine, Haut-Batailley Verso, introduced in 2017.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Haut-Batailley covers a total area of 41 hectares, with 22 hectares currently in production. It is situated in the southern part of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint-Julien in the Bages sector. The soils consist of deep Garonne gravel.

The grape varieties planted are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (37%), and Petit Verdot (3%). The average age of the vines is 25 years. The estate replanted 19 hectares within the Pauillac appellation in 2018.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting is carried out by hand. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for approximately 16 months, with the proportion of new oak reaching up to 70%.
