Identity

Château Lynch-Moussas is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Pauillac, in Gironde. It is owned by the Castéja family, with Philippe Castéja as its current proprietor. The cellar master is Hugues Mathieu. The château is classified as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé en 1855.

History and Philosophy

The origins of Château Lynch-Moussas date back to the 18th century, founded by the Lynch family. The Castéja family acquired the estate in 1919, with Jean Castéja as the first proprietor in this lineage. The property underwent several divisions throughout its history, notably in 1835 and a split from Lynch-Bages in the early 19th century. It was purchased by M. Vasquez in 1845. In 1969, Émile Castéja took over management, followed by his daughter Chantal and his son Philippe. Philippe Castéja has managed the estate since 2001, carrying forward the family legacy. The estate is committed to sustainable viticulture and is HVE-certified. It was also nominated in the "Faune & Flore" category of the Trophées Bordeaux Vignoble Engagé.

Appellations

Château Lynch-Moussas produces wines under the Pauillac and Haut-Médoc appellations. The main cuvée, Château Lynch-Moussas, is in the Pauillac appellation, whilst the second wine is in the Haut-Médoc appellation.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Lynch-Moussas vineyard spans an area of 62 hectares. The soils consist of Garonne gravels. The average age of the vines is around 40 years, with a planting density of 8,500 vines per hectare. Harvesting is carried out by hand. The grape varieties comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Merlot (25%).

Signature Cuvées

The estate produces two principal cuvées. The flagship wine is Château Lynch-Moussas, a red wine classified as a 5e Grand Cru Classé en 1855, crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This wine is defined by its barrel ageing.

The second wine is Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas, also a red wine, created in 2001 and produced under the Haut-Médoc appellation. It also undergoes barrel ageing and offers an aromatic profile and structure that allows it to be enjoyed in its youth or after several years of cellaring.

Vinification and Ageing

Vinification at Château Lynch-Moussas follows traditional methods, including cold maceration and the use of stainless steel vats. Ageing for the grand vin, Château Lynch-Moussas, lasts 18 months in oak barrels, 55% to 60% of which are new. The second wine, Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas, also benefits from barrel ageing.
