Château Blaignan

Identity

Château Blaignan is a winegrowing estate established in the Bordeaux vineyard region. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was the stronghold of the lords of Blaignan. The estate was formerly known as Taffard de Blaignan. It is managed by SC Château Blaignan. Régis Porfilet serves as managing partner, while Amélie Porfilet is the oenologist and cellar master, and Emmanuel Lesné is the technical director.

History and philosophy

Vine growing at Château Blaignan has been documented since the 14th century, reflecting a long-standing viticultural heritage. In 2004, the property came under the aegis of Crédit Agricole, with Denis Dubourdieu serving as consultant. The estate adopted sustainable viticulture practices (agriculture raisonnée) from 2007 onwards. The producer is LA GUYENNOISE.

Appellations

Château Blaignan produces wines under the Médoc appellation and is also classified as Cru Bourgeois Médoc. The vineyard plots are located in the northern Médoc.

Château Blaignan wines can be purchased directly at the property, and wine tastings are available. The estate does not offer guest rooms or holiday cottages (gîtes). The vineyard (terroir)

Château Blaignan's vineyard covers an area of 100 hectares. It is characterised by a clay-limestone terroir formed by Quaternary sedimentation. The estate's topography offers diverse sun exposures and elevation, including two knolls reaching 40 metres in height. The grape varieties planted consist of 49% Cabernet-Sauvignon and 51% Merlot.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées, notably Château Blaignan, Château Prieuré De Blaignan and Château Côtes De Blaignan. The 2004 Château Haut-Blaignan, a still red wine, was awarded one star by the Guide Hachette des Vins, which described it as a “very successful wine”.

Vinification and ageing

Château Blaignan's wines undergo oak barrel ageing for certain cuvées, while others, such as Château Haut-Blaignan 2004, are aged in vat. Château Côtes De Blaignan 2017 has an output of around 86,000 bottles, with an estimated optimal ageing window between 2023 and 2028. The recommended serving temperature for the estate's red wines is generally between 17 and 18 °C.
