Château Clos Chaumont is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Haux, in Gironde. Founded in 1994 by Pieter Verbeek, it is now managed by his children. For its winemaking, the estate benefits from the consulting expertise of oenologist Hubert de Boüard de Laforest.
History and philosophy
The property was acquired by Pieter Verbeek in 1990. Following this purchase, replanting of the vineyard began in 1992. Château Clos Chaumont, as it is known today, was established in 1994.
Appellations
The estate produces wines under several appellations. For red wines, the appellations used are Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux. The white wines are produced under the Entre-deux-Mers appellation.

The vineyard (terroir)
The vineyard of Château Clos Chaumont covers a total surface area of 11.32 hectares. This is divided between 10.15 hectares of red grape varieties and 1.17 hectares of white grape varieties. The soils lie on the slopes overlooking the Garonne. The red grape varieties consist of 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. For the whites, Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc each make up 50% of the plantings. The rootstocks used are Riparia and 3309. Harvesting is carried out by hand, accompanied by rigorous grape sorting.
Flagship cuvées
The principal red cuvée is Château Clos Chaumont Rouge. The estate's red wines are characterised by twelve months of barrel ageing, with one-third renewed each year. Château Clos Chaumont also produces a second wine, Château Collin du Pin.
For the white wines, whole-berry pressing is used for the Sémillon, followed by fermentation in new oak for this variety. The Sauvignon grapes undergo skin contact maceration and fermentation in vats. The white wines are aged on their lees with regular bâtonnage (stirring).
