Identity

Château de Castelneau is located in the commune of Saint-Léon, in the Gironde. It is owned by Loïc and Diane de Roquefeuil, whose family has been associated with the estate for nine generations.

History and philosophy

The history of Château de Castelneau dates back to the 14th century for its original construction, which was subsequently modified at the end of the 16th century. Wine production on these lands is documented as early as the 12th century. The château, listed on the inventory of historical monuments, has weathered many eras, notably enduring an earthquake in 1759 and a fire during the French Revolution in 1792. Loïc de Roquefeuil, following a career in Paris where he founded a wine distribution company in 1978 and a wine bar in 1979, returned to the estate in 1987. Alongside Diane de Roquefeuil, an interior design graduate who also trained in viticulture and oenology, they took over the management of the property in 1988. Their philosophy embraces an environmentally respectful approach to winegrowing, although the estate has increasingly turned its focus towards tourism and hospitality (weddings, seminars, stays and wine tourism).

The château offers various wine tourism activities, including tours and tastings. Several tour options are available: the Discovery Tour (1 to 1.5 hours with a tasting of 2 wines), the Classic Tour (1.5 to 2 hours with a tasting of 4 wines) and the Prestige Tour (2 to 2.5 hours with a tasting across the estate's full range of wines). Tours are offered in French, English, Spanish and German.

The estate also offers accommodation in the form of self-catering holiday cottages (gîtes) and guest rooms (chambres d'hôtes), with a total capacity of around twenty guests. Accommodation options include the Suite de l’Amiral, the Chambre de l’Évêque, the Chambre de l’Échauguette and La Douceur d’Elvire for the guest rooms, as well as La Mansion and Le Petit Seignouret for the holiday cottages. Château de Castelneau hosts private and corporate events (weddings, seminars, team-building sessions, business meetings, cultural events, birthdays, christenings) in its two reception rooms, Le Grand Chai and L'Orangerie, as well as in its three seminar rooms.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château de Castelneau estate spans a total area of 100 hectares. The vineyard currently covers 6 hectares, following the grubbing-up of a portion of the vines in early 2026. Prior to this, the vineyard area extended over 30 hectares. A parcel of Sémillon blanc vines, planted in 1888, was among those removed. Viticulture here is quality-driven and rooted in an environmentally conscious approach.

The estate produces white wines, crafted notably from the Sémillon grape variety.
