Château Haut Nadeau

Identity

Château Haut Nadeau is a winegrowing estate located in Targon, in the Gironde. Patrick Audouit, an oenologist, is the owner and winemaker, representing the third generation of his family at the helm of the property.

History and Philosophy

The Château Haut Nadeau vineyard was established in 1938. The Audouit family acquired the property in 1945. Initially, production was predominantly sold in bulk until 1984. The first bottling under the Château Haut Nadeau name took place in 1985, marking the transition to commercial estate-bottled wines. Patrick Audouit took over the management of the estate in 1992.

Since taking over, investments have been made to modernise the facilities and vineyard management. In 1998, a new cellar was built and temperature-controlled stainless steel vats were installed. Vineyard management was further enhanced in 1999. A restructuring programme was launched in 2004, including raising the trellis height and conducting soil profile pit analysis. The estate practises sustainable viticulture (lutte raisonnée) and uses techniques such as thermal leaf thinning. In 2021, the wine labels were refreshed.

Appellations

Château Haut Nadeau produces red wines under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation. The estate also crafts a white wine under the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Haut Nadeau vineyard extends over more than 18 hectares. It is situated in the Haut-Benauge, in the heart of the Entre-deux-Mers. High trellising is used across the vines, facilitating optimal canopy management.

Flagship Cuvées

Among Château Haut Nadeau's flagship wines is the red Château Haut Nadeau Réserve du Propriétaire, a blend dominated by Merlot. This red wine is noted for its structure and aromatic profile. The estate also produces the Château Haut Nadeau Cuvée Prestige, a red wine with select vintages aged in oak barrels. For white wines, the estate offers an Entre-Deux-Mers cuvée made from grape varieties including Sauvignon, Sémillon and Muscadelle. These white wines are sometimes aged on total lees.

Vinification and Ageing

Winemaking practices include the use of controlled selected yeasts. Certain vintages of the red wines, such as the Cuvée Prestige, have undergone twelve months of barrel ageing, with one-third of the barrels renewed each year. Other red cuvées are aged in vats. For white wines, ageing on total lees has been carried out for specific vintages.
