Château de Marsan

Identity

Located in the commune of Lestiac, Château de Marsan is owned by Vignobles Gonfrier. The Gonfrier family has managed the property across three successive generations, with Guillaume Gonfrier closely associated with the estate.

History and philosophy

The winemaking history of Château de Marsan dates back to the 17th century, when the estate first began producing wine. The cru takes its name from the Viscounts of Marsan, the original founders of the estate. In 1962, the Gonfrier family acquired the château and its vineyard.

Appellations

Château de Marsan produces wines under the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux and Bordeaux clairet appellations. The Cadillac appellation is also listed among the estate's output.

Practical information

Tastings and direct sales are available at the estate. Château de Marsan features five vinification cellars. The red wine is best served between 16 and 17 °C and pairs wonderfully with an entrecôte steak.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château de Marsan vineyard extends across an area of approximately 47 to 50 hectares, depending on the source. The estate's primary grape varieties are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. For white wines, Sauvignon and Sémillon are also cultivated.

Signature cuvées

The estate offers red wines, notably the red Château de Marsan Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux, alongside rosé wines such as Château de Marsan Bordeaux clairet. These wines are generally noted for their balance and fruit-forward character. The red blend can comprise equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the grape varieties Sauvignon and Sémillon are used for the white wines.

Vinification and ageing

Selected Château de Marsan cuvées benefit from barrel ageing, which can range from 12 to 16 months.
