Château de Portets

Overview

Château de Portets is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Portets, in Gironde. It has been owned by the Théron family since 1956 and is currently managed by Marie-Hélène Yung-Théron. Jérôme Folin serves as cellar master, alongside vineyard manager Stéphane Grenier.

History & Philosophy

The history of Château de Portets dates back to medieval times, boasting a longstanding winemaking heritage. The estate features remarkable architectural heritage, notably its Renaissance façade—listed as a Monument Historique since 29 April 2013—and its elegant 14th-century Tour de Gascq. On 31 July 1808, Emperor Napoleon I stopped at the château before making his entrance into Bordeaux.

The estate was acquired by Jules Théron in 1956. Since then, the family has been dedicated to environmentally conscious viticultural practices, including returning to mechanical tilling, grassing over vineyard rows, and utilising biocontrol products. Château de Portets demonstrated this environmental commitment through the CIVB's Environmental Management System (EMS) in 2017, culminating in Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) Level 4 certification in 2024.

Appellations

Château de Portets produces wines under the Graves Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), in both red and white. Wines under the Bordeaux appellation are also crafted at the estate.

Winemaking & Ageing

Harvesting is carried out by hand for white grape varieties and mechanically for red varieties. The red wines undergo 12 months of ageing, while the white wines are aged for 6 months.

The estate welcomes visitors for cellar door visits and tastings all year round. The tasting room opening hours are: from April to October, Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00; from November to March, Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. Visits can be booked directly via their website. The site is fully wheelchair accessible and pets are welcome. Tailored activities are offered for groups (5 to 50 people), families, and children (treasure hunt). Guided tours are available in French, English, and Italian. The estate also features an on-site shop, an online boutique, click-and-collect, and delivery services. Accepted payment methods include credit/debit cards, cheques, and cash.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château de Portets vineyard covers a total area of 35 hectares, comprising 30 hectares planted with red grape varieties and 5 hectares with white varieties. The red plots, averaging 20 years of age, are planted with 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. The white vineyard, with an average age of 15 years, features a grape variety blend of 60% Sémillon, 30% Sauvignon, and 10% Muscadelle. The planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare.

Flagship Cuvées

Château de Portets produces both red and white wines. The red wines, crafted primarily from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, showcase the structure and aromatic profile typical of the Graves appellation. They benefit from 12 months of ageing. The white wines, made from Sémillon, Sauvignon, and Muscadelle, undergo 6 months of ageing.
