Château Gazin

Identity

Château Gazin is a winegrowing estate located in Pomerol, Gironde. It is owned by the De Bailliencourt dit Courcol family, currently represented by the fifth generation of descendants of Louis Soualle. Nicolas de Bailliencourt manages the estate, alongside co-managers Edouard and Elise de Bailliencourt. Vineyard management and cellar master duties are overseen by technical director Mickaël Obert. Oenology is the result of a close collaboration between Mickaël Obert and Thomas Duclos.

History and Philosophy

The earliest documented records of the Château Gazin site date back to the late 18th century, when Antoine Feuilhade owned the property. The estate was built on the remnants of a 12th-century hospital established by the Knights of Malta for pilgrims travelling the Camino de Santiago. At the beginning of the 20th century, Louis Soualle purchased the property, and the current family took ownership in 1918. The present generation took the reins in 1988. From the late 1980s onwards, the cellar and estate facilities underwent extensive rebuilding. The estate is dedicated to traditional, environmentally conscious viticulture, employing practices such as soil tilling, cover cropping, and fostering wildlife and biodiversity. Château Gazin is a member of the Académie du vin de Bordeaux.

The Appellations

All of Château Gazin's parcels are situated on the Pomerol terroir, and the estate produces wines exclusively under the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Pomerol.

Opening hours are from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The estate notes that the château is currently undergoing renovation and cannot welcome visitors at present, with tours set to resume from September. Visits are strictly by appointment only.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

Château Gazin's vineyard spans approximately 24 to 26 hectares. Perched on the high terrace of the Pomerol plateau, it features clay-gravel soils rich in blue clays (smectites) and iron pan (crasse de fer). The vines average around 35 years of age. The grape varieties are heavily dominated by Merlot (84% to 90%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (7% to 8%) and Cabernet Franc (3% to 8%). Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand.

Signature Cuvées

The estate's flagship wine is Château Gazin. The property also produces a second wine, L'Hospitalet de Gazin, introduced in 1986, with an annual output of roughly 12,000 bottles. The wines of Château Gazin are widely praised for their classic, elegant, and consistent profile, epitomising the true style of the Pomerol appellation.

Vinification and Ageing

Vinification is conducted without added sulphur. The wines undergo ageing in oak barrels for 16 months. For the grand vin, around 40% of the barrels are new oak. The estate's average annual production ranges between 80,000 and 100,000 bottles.
