Identity

Château Vieux Maillet is a winegrowing estate located in Pomerol. It is owned by Frédéric Stévenin through his family investment holding company, with Anthony Appollot serving as managing director.

History and Philosophy

Anthony Appollot joined the estate in 2011. Château Vieux Maillet has undertaken a conversion to organic farming, aiming for its first certification with the 2026 vintage. The estate uses drones to detect fungal diseases and apply targeted organic treatments.

Appellations

The estate's parcels are situated on the eastern edge of the Pomerol plateau, close to the Saint-Émilion appellation. The estate produces wines under the Pomerol appellation.

Flagship Wines

Château Vieux Maillet produces an emblematic red wine crafted from hand-picked grapes. Grape sorting is carried out using Tribaie technology, which enables densimetric berry sorting.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The vineyard spans a total area of 10.5 hectares, with 7 hectares under vine, situated on the clay plateau of Pomerol. The soils consist of surface gravel overlying blue clay. The average vine age is 35 years. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (85%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (10%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). In 2023, the estate acquired an additional 3.7 hectares from Château La Fleur Gazin.

Vinification and Ageing

Vinification is parcel-by-parcel in small, temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. A proportion of the crop (20%) is vinified directly in 500-litre oak barrels. Ageing is diversified: one-third of the wine is aged in new 225-litre oak barrels, one-third in second-fill barrels, and the final third in terracotta amphorae.
