Château Guiteronde

Identity

Château Guiteronde is a winegrowing estate located in Villenave-d'Ornon. The family has owned the property since 1855, with Nelly Delerue as its current owner. Her daughter, Joëlle Mauriet, and her grandchildren, Frédéric and Nicolas, also take an active part in running the estate.

History and Philosophy

The history of Château Guiteronde dates back at least to the 18th century, with written records documenting the estate's existence. It was originally known as Domaine de Larroqua. In 1779, Antoine Dutemple acquired the property, which then passed into the hands of Bernard Auguste Journu in 1808. The current buildings date from the early 19th century. The present family established itself at Château Guiteronde in September 1855, when Pierre Raymond Sarraute purchased the estate. Annonciade nuns are also said to have occupied the site as early as the 16th century.

The estate has evolved significantly over time. In 1941, a parcel was sold to Georges Bert and later resold in 1965 to the Du Hayot family, who farmed it under the name Château Guiteronde Du Hayot. Meanwhile, Vignobles Du Hayot leased and managed other parcels of the estate from 1963 onwards. Part of the holding was reunited in 2004. The estate has committed to converting to organic viticulture, and the takeover by SCEV DOM. DU CH. GUITERONDE took place in 2018.

Appellations

Château Guiteronde produces wines under several appellations, predominantly Pessac-Léognan, as well as Bordeaux blanc and Bordeaux rosé.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The vineyard of Château Guiteronde covers 13 hectares in Villenave-d'Ornon. The soils are characterised by gravel knolls (croupes de graves), notably across a 1.3-hectare micro-parcel planted with 5-year-old Merlot vines.

Flagship Cuvées

Château Guiteronde offers red wines crafted from equal proportions of Cabernet grape varieties. A dedicated cuvée is produced from a micro-parcel of Merlot. These wines are built for several years of cellaring.

The estate also produces white wines, notably a 100% Sauvignon Blanc, alongside rosé wines.

Vinification and Ageing

Harvesting is carried out by hand, and the grapes are transported in traditional grape tubs (comportes) to the winery. Berry-by-berry sorting is performed. For the sweet wines, a meticulous selection of botrytised berries (noble rot) is carried out across successive pickings (tries successives).

White wine vinification involves overnight settling and pressing with a vertical hydraulic basket press. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels. Barrel ageing is closely monitored, with regular topping up (ouillage) and racking every three months. For certain red cuvées, ageing lasts thirteen months in oak casks.
