Château Haut-Reys

Identity

Château Haut-Reys is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of La Brède. It is owned by Isabelle and Grégoire Gabin.

History and philosophy

The estate was acquired by Isabelle and Grégoire Gabin in 1997. The creation of this Graves growth dates back to 1977.

The appellations

Château Haut-Reys crafts wines under the Graves appellation, available as red Graves and dry white Graves. The estate also produces wines under the Bordeaux rosé appellation.

Winemaking and ageing

Vinification practices vary across the different cuvées. For some white wines, ageing takes place in vats without oak contact. For the red Château Haut-Reys Paumarel cuvée, the wine is aged for one year in new oak barrels. Oak ageing is also used for select red and white cuvées.

Château Haut-Reys is located at 18, allée Perrucade, 33650 La Brède. The estate can be reached by phone at +33 (0)5 56 20 38 29 or by email at gabin.earl@orange.fr. The tasting and sales room welcomes visitors from Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 7:00 pm, and on Saturday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:30 pm to 7:00 pm. On Sundays and public holidays, visits are by appointment. On-site tastings are available. The cellar is open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays, public holidays, and during the first week of January.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Haut-Reys vineyard spans an area of 20 hectares. Among the cultivated grape varieties, Merlot is widely represented, notably in certain red cuvées where it can make up the entire grape varieties profile or a significant majority (80%). For the white wines, Sauvignon is frequently predominant (50% or 75% depending on the cuvée), complemented by Sémillon and Muscadelle. The age of the vines can reach around forty years for certain parcels dedicated to the "Vieilles Vignes" cuvées.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers a range of wines comprising reds, dry whites and rosés. The red cuvées include Château Haut-Reys, Château Haut-Reys Paumarel, and Château Haut-Reys Vieilles Vignes. The Château Haut-Reys Paumarel cuvée is made entirely from pure Merlot. The red wines offer a solid structure well suited to cellar ageing. The white wines, such as Château Haut-Reys, Château Haut-Reys Réserve, and Château Haut-Reys Vieilles Vignes, are blends dominated by Sauvignon, Sémillon and Muscadelle, and are often characterised by their freshness and aromatic expression. The estate also crafts a Bordeaux rosé.
