History and Philosophy

The history of Château Haut-Sarpe is shaped by a long family tradition spanning six generations of owners. The Cru de Sarpe was mentioned as early as 1750 by Pierre Beylot. Notably, the estate was awarded a gold medal at the 1867 Exposition Universelle de Paris. The property is part of Vignobles Joseph Janoueix, a family firm established for several generations.

In terms of viticulture, Château Haut-Sarpe practices sustainable farming and holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification, as well as the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard. The estate is also recognized under the Vigneron Indépendant label.

Appellations

Château Haut-Sarpe produces its wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé appellation. It has been among the properties classified as Grand Cru Classé since 2022.

Flagship Wines

Château Haut-Sarpe crafts a principal red wine. This wine is produced from a blend typical of the region, with a predominance of Merlot and a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc. Vinification takes place in concrete vats, and ageing is carried out in barrels, using around 60% new oak. The grapes are harvested by hand. Average annual production is approximately 75,000 bottles.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Haut-Sarpe vineyard covers an area of around 21 hectares. It is planted on clay-limestone soils, perched at the highest point of the Saint-Émilion hillside. The average age of the vines is 38 years. The grape varieties consist predominantly of Merlot (70%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (30%). A 3-hectare park enhances the estate grounds.

Vinification and Ageing

Vinification at Château Haut-Sarpe is conducted in concrete vats. The harvest is carried out by hand. Wine ageing takes place in barrels, with a ratio of 60% new oak and 40% one-wine barrels or older.
