Identity

Château Jean Faux is a winegrowing estate located in Sainte-Radegonde, in the Gironde. It is owned by the Collotte family, represented by Chrystel and Pascal, who acquired the property in 2002. Pascal Collotte manages the estate. Oenological consulting is provided by Simon Blanchard.

History and philosophy

The foundations of Château Jean Faux date back prior to the 17th century, when the construction of the château is documented. The estate was notably associated with Ezechiel du Mas, Count of Mélac. In 1886, the estate's vineyard spanned 30 hectares and produced 120 tonneaux of red wine. Chrystel and Pascal Collotte settled on the property in 2007. The estate is committed to an environmentally friendly approach, having eliminated chemical inputs and inter-row mechanisation. It began its organic transition in 2008 and embraced biodynamic practices in 2015.

The appellations

Château Jean Faux produces wines under the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur, and Bordeaux Rosé appellations. The parcels are located in Sainte-Radegonde, on the south bank of the Dordogne.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Jean Faux vineyard covers an area of 12 hectares, with 10 hectares planted with red grape varieties and 2 hectares with white varieties. The vines have an average age of approximately 30 years. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, with clay and limestone scree on the white plots. These soils are renowned for their quality, lying in close proximity to Saint-Émilion. The red grape varieties are Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%). For the whites, Sauvignon Blanc accounts for 85% of the plantings, complemented by Sémillon (15%). Harvesting is carried out by hand. The estate benefits from the vineyard management advice of Stéphane Derenoncourt and Claude Bourguignon.

Signature cuvées

The estate offers a range of red, white, and rosé cuvées. Among the red wines are the cuvées Château Jean Faux Les Pins Francs and Bordeaux Rouge Supérieur "Les Sources", crafted from a blend of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%). The Bordeaux Rouge Supérieur "Sainte Radegonde" cuvée features the same blend. For the white wines, Château Jean Faux produces the Bordeaux Blanc "Sainte Radegonde" and Bordeaux Blanc "Les Pins Francs", both composed of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Sémillon (15%). The estate also produces a Bordeaux Rosé.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification at Château Jean Faux incorporates spontaneous fermentations. For the white wines, vinification takes place in oak barrels. The reds are aged in seasoned barrels, and selected vinifications are conducted using whole bunches.
